How to Choose a Retaining Wall Block

Pick the retaining wall block by what the wall has to do. A wall holding back a slope needs a different block than a seat wall around a patio, and the block you choose decides how tall you can build and how much digging it takes.

Retaining Walls

Versa-Lok Standard, Versa-Lok Square Foot, Pisa 2, Roman Pisa, Rosetta Outcropping and the Anchor Diamond Pro are built to hold back soil. For large walls with little room to dig, Rosetta Grand Ledge and Magnum Stone are big, machine-set units.

Seat Walls, Grill Islands and Fireplaces

Brussels Dimensional, Rivercrest, Lineo and U-Cara are made for seating walls, grill islands, pillars and fireplaces. Estate Wall is a two-sided system, and Rosetta Kodah is built for two-sided sitting walls.

Fire Pits and Do-It-Yourself Projects

Country Stone and Castlerok are lightweight tumbled blocks that work together to build curves without cutting. The Rosetta Kodah Fire Pit is a no-cut kit.

For a natural look, our Canadian Boulder Wall is a cubical limestone from Canada that stacks easily, in heights from 8" to 20". See every natural option under Natural Stone Walls.

How Many Retaining Wall Blocks Do I Need?

To figure how many retaining wall blocks you need, multiply the wall length by its height to get square feet of wall face, then multiply by the number of blocks per square foot for the block you pick.

Block face size Blocks per sq. ft. Examples
6" x 16" 1.5 Versa-Lok Standard
6" x 8" 3 Pisa 2, Roman Pisa
8" x 18" 1 Versa-Lok Square Foot

A wall 30 ft. long and 2 ft. tall has 60 sq. ft. of face, so it needs 90 Versa-Lok Standard blocks or 180 Pisa 2 blocks. Add a buried first course and caps for the top. Each block's Installation Guide lists the burial depth.

Questions About Retaining Wall Blocks

Nesbit's has several blocks for sitting walls. Estate Wall is a two-sided wall system and Rosetta Kodah is built for two-sided sitting walls, so both look finished from either side. Brussels Dimensional and Rivercrest are also popular for seating walls, and Versa-Lok Standard works when it's topped with two-sided C2-Caps.

Nesbit's delivers retaining wall block up to 80 miles from Butler, PA. That covers Pittsburgh, Cranberry, Wexford, Zelienople, Grove City, Clarion and Franklin. Our block trucks carry full pallets, and we can arrange freight shipping for projects farther away.

To find how many retaining wall blocks you need, multiply the wall length by the height in feet, then multiply by the blocks per square foot for your block: 1.5 for a 6" x 16" face like Versa-Lok Standard, or 3 for a 6" x 8" face like Pisa 2. Add a buried first course and caps, or send your measurements and our team will check the count.

Nesbit's carries caps to finish most of the walls we sell: Versa-Lok C-Cap and C2-Cap, Double Bullnose Cap and Marmiro Cap, plus natural stone coping in limestone, sandstone and Indian sandstone. Two-sided walls need a cap that's finished on both sides, such as the C2-Cap.

The cheapest retaining wall to build is usually a short wall, under about 3 ft., made from a standard block you can set by hand. Staying under the height where geogrid and an engineered design are required saves the most. After that, the price depends on the block line, the base and drainage stone, the caps and whether you hire an installer. Our team can point you to the blocks that fit your budget.

If you need retaining wall blocks near me in Butler County, Nesbit's Landscape Supply sells R.I. Lampus and Unilock wall block, the Anchor Diamond Pro retaining wall and natural wall stone at 337 Pittsburgh Rd., Butler, PA 16002. Most in-stock wall units are sold by the piece. Customers searching for wall blocks near me or a single retaining wall block near me can pick up at the yard or have block delivered up to 80 miles away. Plan Your Wall With Our Sales Team

Our sales team matches the block to your wall height, look and budget, then works up the full list: block, caps, base stone, drainage stone and geogrid if the wall needs it. Ask about 3D design if you want to see the wall before you build it.

Send the wall's length and height with your estimate request, and we can price the whole wall accurately the first time. Nesbit's sells material only. If you need an installer, we can recommend local contractors who buy their block from our yard.

Great service, friendly staff. Have ordered twice from them and have been thoroughly pleased with the lengths they go to ensure a satisified customer. Prices are the best I've found around me too. Couldn't be happier.
