What You Can Build with Versa-Lok Standard

Versa-Lok retaining wall blocks handle straight walls, curves, corners, columns, steps and freestanding walls with one unit, so a whole project stays in a single product and color.

  • Retaining walls: straight or curved, up to 4 ft. tall without geogrid. Taller walls need geogrid and an engineered design.
  • Steps: stacked Standard units build steps into a slope or through a wall.
  • Columns and corners: split blocks form square corners and columns that match the wall.
  • Freestanding and seat walls: top them with C2-Caps, which are split-faced on both sides.

How Many Versa-Lok Blocks Do I Need?

To figure how many Versa-Lok blocks you need, multiply the wall length by its height to get square feet of wall face, then multiply by 1.5.

  1. Measure the wall length and exposed height in feet.
  2. Multiply length by height to get square feet of wall face.
  3. Multiply by 1.5 to get the block count. Divide by 24 to get pallets.
  4. Add the buried first course and C-Caps for the top. The Installation Guide under Resources lists burial depth by wall height.

Example: a wall 40 ft. long and 3 ft. tall has 120 sq. ft. of face. 120 x 1.5 = 180 blocks. One buried course adds 30 blocks, for 210 blocks total, just under 9 pallets.

What Does a Versa-Lok Retaining Wall Cost?

Versa-Lok cost for a retaining wall comes down to the square footage of wall face and what the wall needs underneath and behind it. These are the numbers that move a price:

  • Wall size. Square feet of wall face sets the block count.
  • Height. Walls over 4 ft. need geogrid and an engineered design.
  • Base and drainage. Crushed stone for the leveling pad, plus clean stone behind the wall.
  • Caps. C-Caps or C2-Caps for the top course.
  • Color. Eclipse and White Birch are special order.
  • Delivery distance from our Butler yard.

Questions About Versa-Lok Block

Homeowners and contractors buy Versa-Lok block at Nesbit's Landscape Supply, 337 Pittsburgh Rd., Butler, PA 16002. We carry Versa-Lok Standard, Versa-Lok Square Foot and Versa-Lok Harmony, plus C-Cap and C2-Cap coping. Versa-Lok is sold by the piece or by the pallet, so you can buy a handful of blocks for a repair or a full pallet for a wall. Pick up at the yard or have it delivered up to 80 miles away. Call 724-586-6317 or request an estimate online.

The cost of a Versa-Lok retaining wall depends on the square feet of wall face, whether the wall is taller than 4 ft. and needs geogrid, the base and drainage stone, the caps and the delivery distance. Multiply wall length by height to get the wall face, then send that number and your color with an estimate request. Nesbit's will price the blocks, caps and stone together.

A Versa-Lok Standard block weighs about 82 lbs and measures 6" tall, 16" wide and 12" deep. One person can set a block by hand. A full pallet of 24 blocks weighs about 1,970 lbs, so plan on delivery by block truck.

To find how many Versa-Lok Standard blocks you need, multiply wall length by wall height in feet, then multiply by 1.5. A 40 ft. by 3 ft. wall needs 180 blocks for the exposed face, plus a buried first course and caps. Send us your measurements and our team will check the count.

A Versa-Lok Standard wall can be built up to 4 ft. tall without geogrid, based on Versa-Lok's published specs. Walls taller than 4 ft. need geogrid and an engineered design, and walls with a slope or driveway above them may need grid at lower heights. Nesbit's carries Alliance Gator geogrid.

Versa-Lok Standard at Nesbit's comes in 10 colors: Allegheny, Black Walnut, Cliffside, Desert, Newport, Saratoga, Sierra and Slate, plus Eclipse and White Birch by special order. Matching C-Caps come in most of the same colors.

Nesbit's delivers Versa-Lok block up to 80 miles from Butler, PA. That covers Pittsburgh, Cranberry, Wexford, Zelienople, Grove City and Clarion. Our block trucks carry full pallets, and we can arrange freight shipping for projects outside that range.

The difference between Versa-Lok Standard and Versa-Lok Square Foot is size. Standard is 6" tall by 16" wide and handles curves, steps and columns. Square Foot is 8" tall by 18" wide, which covers wall face faster on large residential and commercial walls. Versa-Lok Harmony mixes Standard units with smaller Cobble units for a random pattern.

How Our Team Helps Plan Your Wall

Nesbit's sales team helps homeowners and contractors plan Versa-Lok walls, steps and columns. We work up the block count, caps, crushed stone base, drainage stone and Alliance Gator geogrid and fabric, so the whole wall comes in one order.

Measurements make the biggest difference. When you send the wall length, height and color with your estimate request, we can price the project accurately the first time. Our block trucks deliver palletized block up to 80 miles from Butler, and we can arrange freight beyond that.

Nesbit's sells material and does not install it. If you need an installer, we can recommend local contractors who buy from our yard. General Manager Kevin Stewart has helped plan projects at Nesbit's since 2002, and we've been family owned and operated since 1994.

Fourth time using Nesbit's since end of 2019. Absolutely wonderful from customer service through delivery. Reasonable pricing. Loads dumped or spread right where they needed to be.
