| Size | What it is and what it's for |
|---|---|
| 1B | Small chips, about 1/2" and down. Walkways, pipe bedding and setting stone. |
| 2A (2A modified) | 2" and down with fines that pack tight. Driveway base, patio base and paver base. |
| 2B | Clean stone, roughly 1", with no fines. Drainage, French drains and behind retaining walls. |
| #3 | Large clean stone, about 2.5" to 1/2". Construction entrances, driveway base in soft ground and drainage. |
| #9 | A fine limestone, one grain larger than limestone sand or screenings, though most customers can't tell the difference. It drains better than stone dust, so it works as a leveling layer under concrete pavers or natural stone and in other construction jobs. |
Multiply the length and width of the area in feet, multiply by the depth in inches, then divide by 324. The answer is cubic yards.
A 50 ft. by 10 ft. driveway at 4" deep takes about 6.2 cubic yards, so order 6.5. Most new driveways need 4" to 6" of 2A, compacted in layers.
We deliver crushed limestone and other bulk gravel within 20 miles of our Butler yard, including Saxonburg, Mars, Evans City, Harmony, Zelienople, Cranberry Township, Gibsonia and Wexford. Our dump trucks can drop the load where you'll spread it. Delivery has a 2 cubic yard minimum. Outside 20 miles, you're welcome to pick up at the yard.

2A modified stone is a crushed limestone with a 2" top size plus the fine dust left from crushing. The fines fill the gaps, so it packs into a firm base. It's the standard base for driveways, patios and pavers in Pennsylvania.
The best limestone for most driveways is 2A modified, because it compacts into a solid surface. For soft or muddy ground, lay #3 first as a base, then top it with 2A. Plan on 4" to 6" of stone, compacted in layers.
2B stone is a clean crushed limestone, roughly 1" in size, with no fines. Water runs through it, so it's used for French drains, drainage behind retaining walls and around pipes.
To find how much crushed stone you need, multiply the length and width in feet, multiply by the depth in inches, and divide by 324 to get cubic yards. A 50 ft. by 10 ft. driveway at 4" deep takes about 6.2 cubic yards.
For limestone screenings or stone dust, Nesbit's carries #9 limestone. It is one grain larger than limestone sand, and most customers can't tell the difference. #9 drains better than dust or screenings, so it has more uses, including a leveling layer under concrete pavers or natural stone.
Nesbit's delivers crushed limestone up to 20 miles from our yard in Butler, PA, including Saxonburg, Mars, Evans City, Harmony, Zelienople, Cranberry Township, Gibsonia and Wexford. Customers outside that range can pick up at the yard.
The right size depends on whether the stone needs to pack down or let water through. Tell our team what you're building, and we'll recommend the size and figure the cubic yards.
Send the length, width and depth of the area with your estimate request, and we'll confirm the price and a delivery day.
